Pudong treats its garbage cleanly

The city's biggest garbage treatment center opened in Pudong New Area yesterday.

It is expected to treat a daily maximum of 1,000 tons of solid waste produced in Pudong's central areas.

World-leading energy-saving technology has been installed at the Shanghai Environmental Pudong Solid Waste Transfer Transport Operational Center, the city's fifth garbage-treatment center.

"The entire transport and processing procedures are conducted in a closed system and under negative pressure to prevent environmental pollution," said Operation Director Chen Wei.

"A deodorizing mechanism will release natural plant-extract liquid in the workshop to control the smell. There will be no odors, because a big ventilation system will collect vapors from garbage processing and release them after environmentally friendly processing."

All garbage pressed and containerized at the center will be transported to two incineration plants in Pudong.

"Pudong produces about 3,000 tons of garbage every day. The center mainly serves its central areas including Lujiazui and areas hosting the 2010 World Expo," said Zhang Donghu from the Shanghai Environment Group, which is to build a similar center in Zhabei District.

"All garbage in downtown areas will undergo such high-technology and environmentally friendly treatment before the Expo."

Last week, the Shanghai Laogang Renewable Energy Co opened in Nanhui District.

The company will use methane gas and carbon dioxide from garbage to generate power for the national grid and local homes and businesses by the end of the year.

It will be able to handle about 8,000 tons a year, or 70 percent of the city's garbage, in the near future, and will be able to generate up to 110 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
