Shaoxing Fandian
This is an attractive hilltop collection of low-rise buildings of brick and wood in local style, all white walls and curling eaves, arranged around pools stocked with fish and the odd black-awning boat for local color. Once the big official place to stay (for big officials), it has managed to keep up with the times. Buildings 1 and 3 have smaller rooms, building 5 is more upmarket with larger rooms with wooden floors, and building 6 is more luxurious still. Bathrooms stay a standard small size, but grow in amenities. The hotel has three stars but its VIP building has an upper-four-star ambience, and much of the complex was refurbished in 2000.
