Shanghai has started constructing a ring-shaped elevated walkway in the Lujiazui Area, a project engineer said yesterday.
The project will link several key skyscrapers in the Pudong area ?? including the Jin Mao Tower - but is unlikely to link the Oriental Pearl TV Tower because the TV tower managers have safety concerns.
"It will be completed before 2010," a project official, who declined to be identified, told Shanghai Daily during an ongoing exhibition of urban planning at Shanghaimart.
In an earlier interview, Li Junhao, chief engineer of the Shanghai Urban Planning Administrative Bureau, said the local governments had been working together to design the blueprint.
The elevated ring-shaped walkway will help pedestrians reach destinations among Lujiazui after many pedestrians complained the area was restricted only for vehicles and was difficult to walk through.
The government has long considered the elevated walkway project to make up for the poor traffic plan. According to blueprints of the project, the walkways will be 7 meters tall and have connections to the Lujiazui Metro stations of Metro Line 2 and the planned Line 14.
Escalators will be installed at the major entrances of the walkways, the project official said.
