Shaoxing souvenirs includechou doufu("stinky" tofu), invented here, and Shaoxing "yellow wine" (made from rice, and some of it distinctly red rather than yellow), both available in ornate jars. Shaoxing makes 250,000 tons of wine a year, but as with the tofu, you may prefer the jar to the contents. The rear of the ground floor of theHuayi Gongsi,just south of the central square on the east side of Jiefang Bei Lu, has a useful market with many types of wine in ordinary bottles at supermarket prices (as well as travel snacks). Hours are from 8:30am to 9pm.
The livelyFuhe Jie Shichangstreet market runs parallel to Jiefang Nan Lu on the east side, south from Lu Xun Zhong Lu. It's worth visiting more for local color than for actual shopping, although you can look out for the black felt hats(wu zhan mao)favored by the boatmen.
