Xianheng Jiudian
To the right as you face the hotel of the same name, this simple, concrete-floored restaurant with moon gates between rooms is of more literary than epicurean fame, but it attempts to re-create a 19th-century wine-shop atmosphere. Originally set up in 1894 by some distant relatives of Lu Xun, it became famous through his mournful short story about the eponymous intellectual bum, Kong Yiji. Buy tickets from a desk in the center, then point to dishes at a counter to the left, such as local specialtychou doufu("stinky" tofu). Order a measure of rather dark, sweet, sherrylike "wine"(tai diao jiu)from a front counter.
The restaurant actually inside the hotel has indifferent service. The dishes are cooked with Shaoxing wine, but the prices are high for what you get. Try "stinky" tofu steamed with mincemeat (called "rotten thousand sheet steamed meat cake" ormei qian zhang zheng roubing), and "drunken" bamboo shoots(jiu niang zao sun).
