Xin Dongfang Dihao Jiudian (New Oriental Empire Hotel)
The Swiss Belhotel is a better value, but this is a good choice if you want to be on the wharf. The staff is friendly and the royal blue carpets in the guest rooms haven't been damaged yet by cigarette burns and discarded tea leaves. Rooms are the standard model, but the view makes the difference. Try for a corner room, which overlooks the street and has two windows instead of one. Avoid rooms at the back, which face the back of a dark building and smell of mold. The price is the same, so it's only a matter of asking.
