Guangdong Victory Hotel (Guangdong Shengli Binguan)
This hotel has two premises within 2 minutes' walk of each other, both in old colonial buildings with some character. The "four-star" version renovated most floors to a good standard in 2002 (the eighth floor was omitted). The rooms have all the standard amenities, plus free TV-based Internet access. Suites have good bathrooms with proper shower cubicles. There are Western and Chinese restaurants and, bizarrely in such an old building, there's a rooftop swimming pool. The three-star building is the original Victory, with an excellent dim sum restaurant in one corner. The rooms are plainer but in better decorative repair than the average three-star hotel. The cheapest have no windows, but the slightly more expensive ones are larger than average and come with small sitting rooms.
