NLIA was planned as an A-class airport in national standard.The first-phase construction was based on year 2005 market forecast,i.e.8.64 million of passenger volume and 119,800 tons of cargo. A runway, 3,600m in length,was built. The floor space of passenger and cargo terminal is 132,000s.q.m. and 6,700s.q.m. respectively. It allows all types of passenger airliners and freighters to land. A four-lane expressway of 29 kilometers links the airport to the city, and also makes easy access to Nanjing-Shanghai Express way.
As a hub in East China and the alternate of Shanghai Hongqiao Airport,NLIA now serves 64 air routes that link 42 major cities of China including Hong Kong.With the increasing significance of the airport as a gateway, the opening of more international air routes is well under way.
