City Mall (Jiubai Chengshi Guangchang)
The latest megamall to hit town, this gargantuan, rolling edifice of gleaming white marble (suspiciously resembling the ugly white tiles of many a Chinese building) right next to the Jing An Temple was designed by Paul Andreu, who also designed Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, Oriental Art Center, and the collapsed terminal at Charles de Gaulle airport, which may or may not explain the absence of shoppers. As expected, brand name shops such as Montblanc, Burberry and Jean Paul Gaultier share space with an eight-story department store, a basement supermarket and food court, and dining and beauty outlets on the 9th floor. Daily 10am to 10pm.
