Liu Ren Papercut House (Liu Ren Jianzhi Wu)
The art of paper cutting might not sound exciting, but self-taught artist Liu Ren, who works out of a charming courtyard house, works up such a good spiel you may be converted. Papercuts(jianzhi)were gifts in rural China, to be stuck on windows, doors, or lanterns. There's nothing subtle about the traditional papercuts -- a baby with a large member marks the birth of a boy, and a baby surrounded by protective wolves is appropriate for a girl. Liu Ren knows her craft, and is happy to provide instruction (¥200/$25 per hr.; ¥60/$7.50 if taught by her students). Call ahead to book.
