Ye Baihe Binguan (Night Lily Guest House)
This is just the kind of accommodations that China needs. Two forward-thinking foreigners have converted this 1930s colonial mansion on Gulang Yu into what can only be described as a boutique hotel. There are five guest suites done in wonderfully eclectic styles that mix and match antique Chinese furniture with modern designer bathrooms. The view across to the city is breathtaking but actually finding the place in the maze of higgledy-piggledy streets is a nightmare. Better to call one of the owners in advance who will arrange your collection from the docks.
