While the brand name may conjure memories of cheap motels and roadside diners in the U.S., Howard Johnson's has arrived in Xi'an in style. Located right outside the southern city wall, this is one of the best-run new hotels on the market. The lobby is Miami-style tacky, but the rooms are tastefully done, and bathroom fixtures are modern. Some rooms have great views of the wall -- try to book one of these. The hotel is well equipped to deal with English-speaking travelers with at least one overseas employee on staff at all times. Wireless Internet connections are available at all the restaurants, the lobby, club floor lounge, and banquet rooms.
