The first three subway stations that won the title of "Olympic service brand" have started operating in Beijing recently, heralding a training program to bring the city's subway services and facilities to the international level.
The stations at Fuxingmen, Muxudi and Fuchengmen have been model units for their excellent service in the past years. They are interchanges of geographical importance and transport hubs with extensive passenger flows.
The stations are operating according to the international standards guiding subway services in the Olympic host cities. The Beijing Subway Corp. has drawn up new management guidelines for them. Their staff will be trained to know how to behave when meeting foreigners, use sign language when encountering people with a disability and master first aid skills, in addition to being qualified professionally. The company plans to promote the norms gradually to all other stations, numbering up to 100.
Four subway lines are now operating in Beijing, with a total length of 114 kilometers and a daily passenger flow of 1.6 million. By 2008, four other lines will also be running in the capital, bringing the total length of subway lines to 200 kilometers.
