Yong Shun Binguan
Here's a chance to sleep in a former U.S. consulate, built in 1928 with bricks imported from the States at a cost of $200,000 (the first consulate burned down). The neoclassical portico (with an oddly Egyptian touch to the tops of its pillars) has been glassed in and the upper floor extended into the space. The building was refitted and opened as a hotel in 1999. Unfortunately, nobody speaks a word of English and the only decent views are from the much more expensive suites. The standard rooms I saw were cramped and stuffy, outfitted in way too much beige. The gardens and tennis courts are perfectly manicured so it is perhaps better to come here for a little sun in the afternoon but sleep somewhere else.
Facilities:
Restaurant (open intermittently); 2 outdoor tennis courts
