Stung by exclusion from various travel guides, the first hotel in town to accept foreigners is frantically renovating from the top floor downwards. Some of the wallpaper looks unchanged since the hotel's opening in 1946, so be sure to ask for a room on the refurbished seventh floor. May First requires that their staff take classes in English and politeness, which is more than can be said for some five-star hotels in town. Lugging your bags up the stairs to reception is inconvenient, but with a bustling food court downstairs and elevators that only take four people, a stay here is reminiscent of Hong Kong in the 1970s.
Facilities:
Restaurant; food court; tour desk; same-day laundry/dry cleaning
