Grandma's Kitchen (Zumu de Chufang)
Farm-style chandeliers and wall lamps, straight-back wooden chairs with gingham cushions, and framed photos on the wall give this split-level restaurant an appropriately homey atmosphere -- and goes a long way toward explaining how Grandma's is turning itself into a booming franchise with two locations in Chengdu and two in Beijing. The menu might not be entirely familiar -- tuna-fish pizza is undoubtedly the result of a recipe confused in the translation -- but the rest of the menu, which includes fried chicken, a variety of steaks, and much more, is a prayer answered for any U.S. resident craving a taste of home. The pies and desserts are made atGrandma's Deli, next door to the Kehua Bei Lu premises, which specializes in sandwiches and homemade desserts. A comfortable atmosphere with small libraries containing donated English-language paperbacks make either Grandma's location a perfect place to hole up on a rainy day and write postcards.
