Meilongzhen
Established in 1938, Meilongzhen is a Shanghai institution that still draws the crowds after all these years. Its cuisine has evolved over time from strictly regional fare to one incorporating the spices, vinegars, and chilies of Sichuan cooking. Seafood is featured prominently, and popular favorites include deep-fried eel, lobster in pepper sauce, Mandarin fish with noodles in chili sauce, Sichuan duck, and Meilongzhen special chicken, served in small ceramic pots. The atmosphere is a bit stodgy with old-fashioned Qing Dynasty furniture and carved wooden paneling. Staff alternates between attentive and harried. There is another branch in the Westgate mall at Nanjing Xi Lu 1038 (tel.021/6255-6688).
