Hilton Hotel (Jing An Xierdun Dajiudian)
Shanghai's first foreign-owned hotel (1987), the comparatively low-profile 43-story Hilton still rates among the best of the city's hotels, even as it's been buffeted in recent years by an increasing number of ever-more-opulent five-star luxury hotels. In 2003, the hotel began some much-needed renovations and upgrades, which will continue well into 2007. Standard guest rooms, spacious and bright with firm beds and classic furniture, are a bit fatigued, but when fully renovated, they will eventually include flatscreen televisions, bedside controlled lighting, and broadband connection. Besides a slew of fine international restaurants, the hotel also boasts the fully renovated Spa at the Hilton (with reflexology, seaweed treatments, acupuncture, and more), which has few rivals. Above all, however, it's the hotel's top-notch service and highly competent staff that makes it a favorite of Western business travelers. Its prime location -- within walking distance of the attractions of Hengshan Lu and the French Concession -- doesn't hurt either.
