The former homes of prominent people along Shaanxi Road will be opened to the public on June 14, the Jing'an District Tourism Administrative Bureau said.
Twenty-one cultural spots, including the former residence of Tung Chee-hwa, the first chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will be open that day, the bureau said.
Different architectural styles including shikumen homes and European-style residences will be among the houses that will be open, according to the Jing'an District Cultural and Historical Museum.
Officials said to preserve some of the homes, visitors will not be allowed entry to all parts of the residences. As with the former residence of the T.V. Soong family, signs around the home will give visitors information.
Most of the residences were tucked away in ordinary neighborhoods, said the museum.
Professor Yao Kunyi, from the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, said some 133 prominent people once lived in Jing'an District and the southern part of Jing'an was a rich historical and cultural resource.
