The best stays in Le Shan were once within the park itself, but they have all since closed down. A nice alternative is theXiandao Dajiudian (Xiandao Hotel)which is only a 2-minute walk to the back entrance of the park. Out of the city on Dao Long Island, it is surrounded by waterways and greenery. Although the rooms can be a little damp, it makes for a pleasant escape from the dust and general blandness of Le Shan itself. Standard rooms cost ¥268 to ¥388 ($33-$46), but management is open to negotiation. The most comfortable place to stay in downtown Le Shan is theJia Zhou Bingguan,Baita Jie 19 (tel.0833/213-9888;fax 0883/213-3233). It's as three-star hotel with basic modern rooms for ¥360 ($45) and a restaurant. A number of good small restaurants are also in the vicinity of this hotel.Yang'sis inexpensive, with Chinese and Western food and an English menu; it's located at Baita Jie 49 (tel.0833/211-2046). Richard Yang, the proprietor, is a wealth of local knowledge and personal anecdotes. A vegetarian restaurant specializing in faux meat dishes is on Wuyou Shan behind Daxiong Temple.
