Tianjin Bai Jiao Yuan
No restaurant has managed to fill the vacuum left by the inexplicable closing of Gold Cat, once Beijing's most charming outlet forjiaozi(ravioli-like dumplings), but Tianjin Bai Jiao Yuan comes closest. Staff are given to occasional catatonia, and the cliched red-and-gold interior can't match Gold Cat's old courtyard setting, but thejiaoziare just as delicious. Thexiesanxian shuijiao(dumplings with shrimp, crab, and mushroom filling) andniurou wan shuijiao(beef ball dumplings) are treasures, best accompanied by a steaming pot ofchenpi laoya shanzhen bao(duck, mandarin peel, and mushroom potage). There's also a respectable range of Sichuan dishes, pictured on the menu.
