Geming Jinianguan (Revolutionary Memorial Hall/Museum)

While Mao lies under glass in Beijing, the trusty white steed that transported him through northern Shanxi in 1947 stands stuffed behind glass at this museum. According to the sign on the window, the horse, who was then living in the Beijing Zoo, one day turned in the direction of Zhong Nan Hai (where Mao was living at the time), neighed loudly, and went on to join Marx. Unfortunately, there is no English signage, so without a familiarity with the players, the photographs on display have little meaning. That said, the museum houses an interesting collection of old weapons, many of them handmade and crude, personal effects, and military gear. Unless you have a deep knowledge of Communist Party history, the museum -- established in 1950 as "a classroom for advancing patriotism, revolutionary tradition, and the Yan'an spirit" -- shouldn't take more than a half-hour of your time.
