Pentoc Guesthouse (Paduo Binguan)
This guesthouse, once my favorite haunt in Lhasa, has suffered from its huge popularity (book ahead). Its constantly sold-out rooms, none of which have private bathrooms, are now showing sign of age. The staff is apathetic and moody on a bad day and enthusiastic on a good day, and the common showers are equally temperamental. Still, if you like a college dormitory atmosphere, enjoy meeting people, and don't have a lot of cash to spend on accommodations, this is a great place to stay. The hostel, Swiss-owned with Christian leanings, is ideally situated from exploring the Tibetan heart of Lhasa, located right next to the Barkhor Square District. The second-floor restaurant offers an ideal space, decorated with a Tibetan tent, to trade travel tips; it serves a good breakfast, too (but the good-looking baked goods always turn out a bit dry and flavorless). Movies are shown each night at 8pm.
