Portman (Boteman Xicanting)
A ritzy place for a meal -- you can't miss the white grand piano and giant fireplace surrounded by glass in the center of the four-story restaurant -- the Portman serves the most acceptable Western food in Harbin, with decent service and a good atmosphere -- without going over the top. The cabbage rolls with cream sauce are juicy and the Russian red soup is hearty with spice. At all costs avoid the mashed potatoes, which have a sweetness to them that should be illegal. If you must have some starchy tubers, go for the potato salad, which is perplexingly like mashed potatoes, but served cold. A wide range of chicken, fish, and steak dishes is also available. Decent live-music performances run every night from 6 to 10pm.
