Russia (Luxiya Xicanting)
This small cafe decorated with heirlooms left behind by a Russian family is a rare reminder of China's treaty port days, when expatriates would suffer the chaos of prewar China by day and retreat at night to the softly lit, lace-covered comfort of their homes to drink coffee and write fantastic letters to the people they'd left behind. The cafe, nestled inside the cracked-wall room of an old Russian building near the top of Zhongyang Dajie, serves a small but satisfying selection of Western dishes. Try the hearty red vegetable soup, or the "pot beef," a steaming stew of beef, carrot, and tomato. Or just spend the day here with a few cups of coffee and a book.
