Shanghai welcomes 2nd conference of overseas Chinese associations

About 80 representatives from 15 countries, including the US, Canada and the United Kingdom attended a conference of overseas Chinese associations in Shanghai yesterday.

Ma Rupei, vice director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed at the opening ceremony. He introduced a plan to attract overseas talents to serve the country and expressed his hopes for the development of the overseas associations.

Yang Xiaodu, minister of the United Front Work Department, said the conference would boost the setting up of a platform in Shanghai for local enterprises and overseas Chinese. He also called on the overseas associations to give more support the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

Participants proposed suggestions on how to carry out the plan to get overseas talents to better serve the country.

Vice city mayor Tang Dengjie attended the opening ceremony.
