Wuqi Dajiudian
Despite its simple, somewhat dingy (but clean) appearance, this is probably the best restaurant in the city. Locals crowd the place every evening, chatting noisily as they toast each other between mouthfuls of tasty Shanxi specialities. The drink of choice ismijiu,an alcoholic beverage made from millet; this local version, served heated from a small kettle, is a bit cloudy and sweet, and it goes well with the local cuisine. Among the tasty offerings arehuangmomo(sweet steamed millet cake),youmomo(fried doughnut made of millet),kucai tudou(mashed potatoes with wild vegetables),niurou liangfen(bean-starch noodles fried with beef),qiaomian hele(pressed buckwheat noodles with a vinaigrette dressing), andyougao(a pan-fried sticky rice cake).
