By 7am customers are lined up at this restaurant's outdoor stand to buybaozi(stuffed steamed buns) for takeout. Generous portions of good, inexpensive food have turned this restaurant into the most popular breakfast spot in Yinchuan. According to one taxi driver, a ¥3 (40¢)baoziat Shahu is one and a half times the size of a ¥3-baozianywhere else. For very little money you can sample lots of local specialties; choose from among noodle dishes, savory pancakes, eight-treasure soups(babao zhou)-- of which there are many kinds -- and every sort ofbaozi, jiaozi,andhezi(steamed buns, Chinese ravioli, fried meat or vegetable pies). A sample breakfast costing just ¥8 ($1) includes a bowl of noodles, three vegetarianbaozi,two friedjiaozi,and two crepes stuffed with chives, egg, and cilantro. And there are many more choices for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Customers pay food servers with coupons purchased in advance from the cashier. Unspent coupons can also be redeemed there.
