Guangchang Binguan (Plaza Hotel)
Located opposite Renmin Guangchang, this midsize three-star hotel is particularly good value for three people traveling together, even without the hefty discounts that are standard. Despite renovations in 2004, prices have remained unchanged and, with the discounts, all rooms are very reasonably priced. Room decor and furnishings are standard and forgettable, but the staff, outfitted in crisp uniforms, are warm and welcoming, despite (or perhaps, due to) the fact that few foreigners have discovered this hotel. There are two standard room types -- A and B. "A" rooms are slightly bigger and the bathroom ceilings slightly higher, but standard "B" rooms are perfectly acceptable. The difference isn't enough to warrant the additional $17 for an "A" room. The location puts guests within walking distance of the Municipal Museum, People's Square, People's Auditorium, and CITS.
