Dropenling

Taking its name from a Tibetan word that means "giving back for the betterment of all mankind," this store, tucked away near the Muslim quarter of Lhasa, gives all its profits back to the Tibetan artisans who make the store's handicrafts in an attempt to help Tibetan artisans compete with the Nepalese, whose goods have flooded Tibetan markets in recent years. The emphasis here is on quality -- from fine-woven rugs to handbags and jewelry, which also comes with a hefty price tag. The store's goods have inspired pirates to make knockoffs for sale on the pilgrim's circuit of Johkong, but they aren't of the same quality.
