A Day Trip for Art Lovers --To alleviate the pressure of so many tourists descending upon the towns of Yangshuo and Guilin, local authorities opened a sculpture park in 2000, partway between the two. There is a mediocre minorities display, but far more interesting is the Renwen Shanshui exhibition (humanity and landscape). The park showcases many of China's most well-known, contemporary artists, with an interesting selection of abstract and avant-garde works. Visitors can stay the night on the island where there are tents for hire for ¥180 ($23) per night. A more comfortable alternative might theYunwu Shanzhuang(Foggy Resort;tel.0773/384-8899) which has standard rooms starting at ¥280 ($35). This has even inspired some local competition in the form of a second gallery back in town at the Old South Gate (Gu Nan Men), where artists from Guilin Teachers' College have begun displaying their work.
