Chini Bagh Hotel (Qiniwake Binguan)

Though the hotel is located on the grounds of the former British consulate, the consulate and any remaining character are tucked at the very back of the grounds, past the two main ugly white-tiled buildings. Four room choices fit a range of budgets. The cheapest rooms are located in the Jingyuan Building, located towards the back of the complex; the building has a nice patio and a bit of Uighur flavor (the best hotel in Kashgar in the 1980s, actually), but rooms and bathrooms are very worn and slightly grimy now. The North Building (Beilou) offers pleasant rooms with cozy beds but bathrooms in desperate need of renovation. Rooms in the Friendship Building (Youyilou), the circular building at the front of the complex, are the most popular and meet three-star standards, though bathrooms are still a bit worn. Finally, for ¥1,800 ($225) you can rent out the entire second floor of the former British consulate, which consists of three falling-apart bedrooms with bad Chinese furniture and bathrooms that look like they were last remodeled sometime before the Cultural Revolution. The first floor was recently renovated and now serves Uighur-style lunch and dinners. The hotel's location is spectacularly close to the old Uighur parts of town, which makes it a good choice.
