Lotus Bar (Lianhua Jiuba)
Set inside a narrow 70-year-old two-story house east of the Back Lakes, Lotus's small, artsy interior appeals to the city's shyer hipsters. The best reason to come is the pair of couches next to the upstairs window, with bird's-eye views of reconstructed Yandai Xie Jie, a quainter-than-quainthutongrunning east from the intersection of Hou Hai and Qian Hai. Pleasant outdoor seating on the next-door roof is available in summer. If the bar is too crowded, head across the street to Ou, a similarly decorated Thai restaurant under the same management.
