BAMBOO, lotus flowers, red carp and white cranes ? all of these cultural symbols are often seen in Chinese art works. They have now been given a new life in dozens of traditional Chinese paintings crafted with fine and delicate strokes. And, they have been painted by expatriates!
Go and take a look at the Shekou Women's International Club (SWIC) Art Exhibition 2007 and the club's art class, where you will see the paintings really are the masterpieces of these talented and diligent women from different countries.
"Sixteen foreign artists are learning Chinese-style painting using ink and color ? and lots of patience,"the simple introduction to the show says. For many of these SWIC artists, it's their first attempt to paint a traditional Chinese painting. It took two months for Brazilian Gisele Suarez to finish "Bamboo,"and several months for Swede Marika McCabe to finish 80 percent of her "Eagle."
"The course runs twice a week, every Monday afternoon and Saturday morning. Of course not everyone can attend all the classes as they have families to take care of,"said Xie Hui (Sara Eagle), the art teacher. "But, we are touched by the efforts they put into the paintings and happy to see their wonderful achievements displayed here."
The art show will run until June 15 on the first floor of QSI International School, Bitao Building, in Shekou.
