Some city children have been adversely affected by the hot and sultry plum rain season.
"Our daily outpatient and emergency-service numbers have reached some 3,500 in recent days, higher than the hottest days last year," said Dr Yue Mengyuan, director of the Shanghai Children's Medical Center's outpatient department.
"Our ordinary patient amount is 2,000 to 3,000 a day. The main complaints have been cold, fever, diarrhea and asthma.
"Many children's digestive ailments are because of eating ice-cream and unhealthy food sold at streetside stalls."
Muggy weather is expected to continue this week.
Occasional rain is forecast for today and tomorrow thunderstorms are likely, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.
Expect cloudy from late Thursday to last for a day or two, it added.
The high temperature will range between 32 to 34 degrees Celsius, after lows of between 25 to 26 degrees. Plum rain season began on Friday, and should last two weeks.
