SPOON by Alain Ducasse
Dinner at this sophisticated, seductive venue is more than just a meal -- it's an experience. From the moment you walk past the restaurant's "wine cellar," with approximately 3,000 bottles of both New and Old World selections on display, you know that this is a place of superlatives. The focal point of the dining room is the ceiling, where 550 hand-blown Murano glass spoons are lined up like a landing strip, directing one's attention to the open kitchen and to the stunning harbor view just beyond the massive windows. The restaurant is so low and close to the water that dining here is almost like being on a junk -- albeit a very luxurious one.
The menu, featuring the contemporary cuisine inspired by chef and restaurateur Alain Ducasse, gives diners the freedom to mix and match food and cooking styles by selecting an entree (the steak is among the best I've had), its sauce, and accompanying vegetables. You might, therefore, pair Chilean sea bass with pistachio and macadamia with a coconut/lemon-grass condiment, served with a baby spinach bamboo salad. Or, your entire group may opt for the Sexy Spoon, a special tasting menu costing HK$750 (US$97/£54) per person for six courses or HK$950 (US$123/£68) for eight courses. For bargain hunters, the Sexy Sunset Menu, available from 6 to 7pm and again from 10 to 11pm, gives an appetizer, a choice of starter and entree, dessert, and a glass of champagne, for HK$450 (US$58/£32).
