Part guesthouse, part experimental art; but even with the proximity of the stream just outside, this hotel is still no Fallingwater. Feng Yue San Shui Kezhan (Yunnan Inn)
Opened in 2003, the owner is a successful Beijing-based artist, and this is where he keeps his lovable mongrel, Big Diamond (Da Bao). Apt really, because this is a lovable mongrel of a hotel, possessing the character that is rarely found in Chinese hotels. A series of interesting rooms cling to the surrounds of a converted studio by means of steel walkways and metal girders. And while most Chinese hotel rooms are arranged neatly off central corridors, rooms here go off in all different directions. There are few government-approved amenities, but this is more than made up for by eccentric touches, such as being able to watch the fish under your feet as you check your e-mail, or being treated to the unparalleled views from the enormous rooftop. Be sure to request a room with a separate bathroom; the alternative is just too odd.
