This four-star 30-story tower under local management was partially renovated in 2005. Most guests are Chinese, but the staff can handle non-Chinese guests as well. Guest rooms are fully modernized, with all the usual amenities, a work desk, and room for two chairs and a coffee table. If you want to be near the French Concession with convenient access to the trendy cafes of Hengshan Lu, but the prices at the adjacent Hilton and Equatorial hotels are too steep, the Shanghai will work. Though rack rates here are marked high, in reality the hotel gives up to 60% discounts to remain competitive.
