Jim's Tibetan Guest House (Ji Mu Zang Shi Jiudian)
At the time of writing, this was one of the best hotel choices in town. The location, a bit off the beaten track, is more than made up for by the levels of service, interior decoration, and imagination on the part of the owners, one Kampa Tibetan, and the other Dutch. Rooms are bright and colorful as well as comfortable, but often booked solid with Western tour groups. This is also a great place to eat. For four people or more, go for the Tibetan smorgasbord at ¥30 ($3.80) per person. We counted at least 16 dishes as well as a delicious dessert. You may want to keep away from Jim's No. 1 Whiskey, a local moonshine whose harshness is disguised by a few local herbs, but would probably be better in a tractor carburetor than some unwary tourist's stomach.
