Shanghai JC Mandarin (Jincang Wenhua Dajiudian)
This five-star, 30-story luxury hotel with management from the Singapore Meritus group seems perpetually consigned to the shadow of the neighboring Portman Ritz-Carlton, but manages to hold its own with big tour group bookings from Southeast Asia. The hotel underwent some welcome renovations to its facilities recently, but thankfully left intact the glorious hand-painted mural of Ming Dynasty admiral Zheng He (China's Columbus) in the lobby. Rooms are large and plush and have all the expected amenities including broadband. Overall service is efficient, and the staff seems to have regained their sense of humor somewhat in the last few years.
Facilities:4 restaurants; deli; 2 lounges; heated indoor swimming pool; 2 outdoor tennis courts; health club and Wellness spa with Jacuzzi and sauna; concierge; tour desk; 24-hr. business center; salon; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; same-day laundry service/dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms; executive-level rooms.
