Sequoia, golden camellia, jipijapa and other rare plants from 12 botanic gardens around the country are on display in Shanghai Botanic Garden for the 2008 Flower Show.
Gardens have sent their most precious plants. Sequoia, from Beijing Botanic Garden, is the tallest tree species in the world. A garden in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region sent nearly 20 rare medicinal plants specially produced in that area.
More than 2,000 tropical orchids of 80 species are also on display in the greenhouse of the garden during the holiday. Visitors can find the biggest, smallest and the most fragrant flowers during the show.
One of the most attractive is the orchid sanderianum from New Guinea, flower experts said. The diamond of the flower reaches 2 meters and it is regarded as the queen of orchids.
Sanderianum was listed as an endangered flower in the 19th century.
There are 5.6 million flowers at the show which will end on June 1.
The garden received nearly 20,000 visitors on Thursday, the May Day holiday.
