One of the 307 earthquake victims airlifted from Sichuan Province to Shanghai for treatment and rehabilitation has been discharged from Shanghai No. 9 People's Hospital.

The 52-year-old, Meng Shouhui from Mianzhu, was transported to Shanghai on May 28. She was sent to Shanghai No. 9 with another 12 patients.

Hospital officials said Meng suffered a fracture to her right knee but was now able to walk unaided.

"She wanted to go back to her home town as soon as possible since one of her parents is in a critical condition, which is not related to the earthquake," said Chen Zuliang, a hospital official, yesterday.

"After experts' group diagnosis on her recovery situation and discussion with Shanghai Health Bureau, we decided to discharge her on Monday. We sent a vehicle and medical staff to escort her to Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, to meet her husband and mother-in-law, who was sent to a Hangzhou hospital for treatment. She is expected to leave for Sichuan today."

Shanghai Health Bureau officials have met local hospital officials and medical experts to discuss procedures for discharging quake victims. Every patient must undergo group diagnosis and thus ensure no possible after-effects before leaving the hospital, the meeting decided. Relative documents will be issued in a few days.

"Our orthopedics department has reported to the hospital authority about discharging three patients. We will follow the bureau's requirement," said Xia Lin from Shanghai Children's Medical Center.

A total of 307 people injured in the earthquake were sent to the city by plane on May 26 and 28. They were received by 19 local hospitals.
