Yangtze Hotel (Yangzi Fandian)
Conveniently located a block south of the Nanjing Lu pedestrian mall and a block east of People's Square, this striking Art Deco hotel with white-washed walls and balconies with black grillwork, originally built in 1934 and at that time the third biggest hotel in the Far East, has undergone a complete refurbishment and is today an excellent mid-range choice for international travelers. Rated only three stars, the hotel offers in-room amenities that rival those at four-star outfits further down Nanjing Lu. The spacious, modern rooms, a majority of which were renovated in 2005, come with thick drapes, perfectly comfortable beds, and broadband access. The majority of the staff tries to be helpful though their English is not always up to par.
