Muou Bowuguan (Puppet Museum)
While the idea of a puppet museum may sound a little dull, Quanzhou is full of surprises. I was initially inspired to visit this place after seeing a short puppetry documentary, known locally as "jia li opera" at the Quanzhou Museum. The marionettes here have up to 30 strings and can be manipulated in the most fascinating ways. Have you ever seen a puppet disrobe or pour itself a drink? There are some useful captions in English and Chinese. Quanzhou now hosts an annual puppetry festival that attracts practitioners from all over the world. Check locally for more details.
